Refinishing The Dining Room Table

We’ve had our dining room table since we got married over 18 years ago (now 20 years!).  It has been through serious abuse with 4 children’s crafts, school, meals, and well…life.  As you can see…it has been used for much more than just a place to eat.

Out of necessity, I have kept my table covered with a table cloth for quite some time.  It looked fine covered…but I really wanted to be able to uncover it and show its natural beauty hidden deep below many years of use!! :))  Since refinishing my steps, I knew I could refinish the table too. So I gave it a shot.

, Saving 4 Six

First I (actually, one of my sons) sanded down the whole thing.  He did a great job…these teenage boys come in really handy!

Next I put a wood conditioner on the table before I stained it.  Then I used the stain that I used on my staircase makeover.   I put several coats on to get the desired look.  Next, I sealed the table with a couple coats of poly urethane, danish oil and then several coats of furniture wax.

, Saving 4 Six

After the top was done, I painted the bottom portion with a black enamel paint.  I also painted the benches and chairs black too.

I love it…absolutely love it!  I can’t believe this is my table.  It looks so classy yet country at the same time…hmmm, “country chic?”  Maybe I’m on to something!?

***UPDATE…7/2013 – My Table Makeover has held up beautifully over the past two years.  It still looks like a new table.  I think the furniture wax has made all the difference.

Don't shake the can. Only use a stirring stick. Shaking puts the bubbles in the liguid.

Hi Sherri, Oh I hope you get your stairs done! When I poly urethane I stir…not shake the container. This eliminates many of the bubbles. Also, between coats I use a scotch brite pad to sand away any imperfections. I hope this is helpful.

What a great makeover! It's amazing how much better the top looks now! I just refinished my farmhouse table this past week and I totally know that it's not an easy job, but boy are you lucky that your son sanded the table done for you. I would have put my son to work if he wasn't 7 months old. 🙂 Here is the link to my makeover: http://www.migonishome.com/2011/08/

Do all the coats of stain, poly, wax etc render the table “kitchen proof” …I mean will it be durable and scratch/stain proof?

Wow! Your table & chairs looks great. A have a couple of queations ~ what type of acrylic paint did you use on them? Were the table & chair bottoms painted to begin with? They look in pretty good shape (the bottoms)in you photos, did you just touch them up or do a complete color change? I am wanting to paint mine but hubby is resistant as there’s no damage to them (we are empty nesters) ~ I’m just wanting a change. Thanks ~ Deborah

Michelle – The stain, poly, oil, and wax render the table to be as “kitchen proof” as wood can be.(says my better half) The wax makes it easier to rub out any scratches…I have seen that first hand. However, the wax keeps me busy rubbing off any fingerprints because I want it to stay shiny and look like new.
Deborah – I used an enamel paint for the chairs, benches, and base of the table. I had to add an update to the bottom of this post because when I wrote the post, I wrote the wrong kind of paint. Sorry for the confusion. The base of the chairs and table was green and the seats were stained. The base of the benches were black and the seats were stained so I repainted all of them.
I hope this is helpful. Thanks for visiting Saving 4 Six

In regard to sanding the legs, I did “rough up” the legs…just by lightly sanding. Mostly just to get the “crud” off from years of spills and splashes. I did not sand them down like I did the top.

I think spray paint would be ok however, I think an enamel would be BEST. A clear protective coat could not hurt. It would offer the extra protection for the chairs that get so much use!

I also have a similar table with 6 chairs only they are light wood and white. I would like to refinish using a darker stain with black (like yours). Did you have to sand the chairs or use a primer prior to painting them black? Also, how many coats of black did you have to do? Thanks so much for the help!

Because I was applying enamel paint to enamel paint it was not necessary to use a primer.
I put 2-3 coats of paint on them. Mostly two but I saw a couple spots I missed so I had to go it some of it a third time.

Your table looks wonderful! Would you care to share what brand of paint you used on the legs and chair?

We are Sending our two “home schooled for life” girls off to college and we did a thrift store run looking for tables for their apartment. What we found match your dining table – even to the green legs. Paid total 26 dollars for coffee table, end table and another side table.

Tops were in rough shape but sanded down nicely. Legs actually look pretty good but the girls prefer black. They wanted to just paint but I figured we needed to rough them up a bit. Your comment about using enamel over enamel (and therefore no primer) was helpful, but found looking for paint confusing. There seems to be oil and water based enamel. Is one better than the other? What did you use?

WOW!! What a great deal you got! Homeschoolers for life…love it! I have two high schoolers this year and two younger. I’m ordering curriculum like a crazy woman and just turned in my paperwork to the county today…busy, busy, busy!
The paint that I used on my table, my hope chest, sewing table, and much more you can find on my blog was Rust-oleum Satin Black. Here is a link to a picture of the can. http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=162
Each of these things have held up BEAUTIFULLY. I would highly recommend this paint (no one is paying me to say that).

Love it! I will be refinishing mine this spring. I just have a couple silly questions about prep work. Did you have to strip the finish off before sanding, and did you do anything to the bottom portion before painting?

Love your project. Had a question regarding the chairs. Other than the enamel paint used, did you use some kind of protective coat or anything after?

Wow: We have a laisse-faire economy(for you AMERICAN that means "Leave Well enough alone). Our economy, laws, and policies to assist people are purely based largely in protecting the capitalist. This is purely, largely poppycock. The point about our limited access to mental health treatment has some merit though. And soon the Government will know if you seek treatment. I wonder if free care where the authorities are told about it will increase or decrease the amount of care provides to those in need.

Would you please tell me the brands of everything you used on the table? I have an old table and chairs and I plan on doing the same project – what kind of wood conditioner? What kind of poly urethene? (satin or glossy, etc.?)

What kind of furniture polish/oil? I’m amazed how wonderful your table & chairs look, and are hoping for similar results.

Hey! I’ve gotten into refinishing furniture and love it. My next project is redoing my own kichen table (which I’ve already redone once… badly), and your table is my inspiration piece! Thanks so much for your hints and tricks as I plan on using using them (even put a link to your site from my Facebook page where I’m chronicling this!

    Thanks again!

Thank you for posting, you gave me the courage and inspiration to do my own table and chairs. Interestingly enough, I have the exact same table and very similar chairs and bench. My set is also about 20 years old, but it had a natural finish: this is quite a change. I’m not quite finished yet, but it’s looking great and it does update everything to look currant. If it looks as good as yours, I’ll be very happy!
