Oh my goodness, oh my goodness!! I have just tasted the most divine apple butter I have ever eaten! I used to work at an Amish Restaurant so I have had my fill of apple butter. I have never tried to make it though…until now.
I got the idea for this recipe from AllRecipes. But this particular recipe called for me to cook it in the crock pot for 11 hours and I didn’t want to get up during the night to turn off the crock pot. So, I changed it up a bit. This is what I did:
Fill your 7 quart crock pot with peeled, cored and finely chopped apples
We had dueling Apple Peeler Corer Slicers from Pampered Chef going on. If you work with apples much, one of these is a necessity. Contact me if you need the name of a Pampered Chef Representative. |
- 2 cups white sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- In a medium bowl, mix the sugar, cinnamon, cloves and salt. Pour the mixture over the apples in the slow cooker and mix well.
- Cover and cook on high 6 hours, stirring occasionally until the mixture is thickened and dark brown..
- Uncover and stir with a whisk, if desired, to increase smoothness.
- Spoon the mixture into sterile containers, cover and refrigerate or freeze.
I cannot stress how good this stuff is. I was really surprised how easy it was too. I’m going to use this for small gifts at Christmas with a little loaf of homemade bread.

This sounds great and so easy to make! I love apple butter and have often wondered how it’s made and if I could manage it at home! Thanks for posting this recipe, I’ll write it down and try it out sometime in the coming weeks!

How do I get on your Christmas list????
I made this last year with a bit of a difference. I first cut the apples into fourths and put in the crockpot to cook (before peeling or coreing–just washed) and cooked until really soft. I then put them through a food mill like this http://www.greatknives.com/Mouli%20products/food%20mill%202%20lg.jpg and then added the spices and cooked it til it was the consistency that I wanted. I made some with sugar and some with Splenda for those in the family who are diabetic. All LOVED it! Easy peasy…

Looks yummy! Those dishes are gorgeous too! 🙂
I just picked up the cutest jars at Target that would be perfect to fill with something like apple butter for Christmas!

Love this & have used the allrecipes recipe many times. Sometimes we don’t even add the sugar and then can the apple butter to use as a fat substitute for baking (great with gingerbread, muffins, etc.)

looks great! Can’t wait to make it! Can you tell me about how many pounds of apples it took for 7 qt crock pot? Thanks! Love your blog by the way!
Carrie says
Thank you all for the kind comments. This stuff is really good. I’ve been eating every morning on my toast.
Brenda, I would guesstimate that it takes about 15lbs of apples to fill the crock pot. After the coring and peeling it is about 7lbs. that fills the crock pot. When I made this last batch, I was working with about 42 lbs of apples and making apple sauce and desserts too!
Enjoy.

I just discovered apple butter this year and canned a bunch of it. My recipe called for adding 2 cups of cider and 2 cups of vinegar, so it took a hundred years to boil down. But it was so worth it. Now I just hope no one dies from my casnned goods! Come check out my canning experiences this fall!

Oh and I bought a peeler/corer for the 42 pounds of apples I picked. WHAT A GODSEND! I would have dropped dead if I had had to peel 42 pounds of apples. What an ingenious device and so cheap!!

I don’t have a 7qt crockpot. Do I just peel and fill and what about the other ingredients? Do you have a way to scale them down to a 5qt?
thank,

I made this again while visiting my mom last week and we used her 5 quart crock pot and just used 1 1/2 cups sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons of cinnamon, and just over 1/8 teaspoon both cloves and salt. In her 5 quart crock pot it took a little longer to cook as well. I think it was because the lid of her crock pot was plastic as opposed to my glass lid which gets a better seal and holds the heat it better. I hope this helps. It is really YUMMY…I think I’m gonna go make me a piece of toast now!!

I want to make the crockpot apple butter, would you tell me what kind of apples are best to use? how many I would need to make a 7qt crockpot full? about how many pints will I have once the apples cook down? it sounds Soooo wonderful for a nice winter breakfast…
Thank you,
Darlene
Carrie says
Hi Darlene,
I would guesstimate that it takes about 15 pounds of apples to fill the 7 quart crock pot. The apples that I use are what we call “deer apples”. They are just a variety of apples. They are the ones the orchard cannot sell full price because they are either too big, too small, or have spots on them. So I don’t just use a particular kind of apple. I get these “deer apples” at my orchard for under $5 for 20lbs.
After cooking down, the apple butter will make between 4-6 pints. We are always dipping in to our apple butter before I actually get it frozen or canned…It’s THAT good!
Enjoy!

I just had to say thank you for this awesome reipe! I have another batch brewing this morning and have received rave reviews from family and friends – who requested more! Since I am out of canning jars (gotta love a good bounty!) I have been freezing it and that works well to! Thank you again and have a blessed holiday season!
