We’ve had our dining room table since we got married over 21 years ago. It has been through serious abuse with 4 children’s crafts, school, meals, and well…life. As you can see…it has been used for much more than just a place to eat.
First I (actually, one of my sons) sanded down the whole thing. He did a great job…these teenage boys come in really handy!
Next I put a wood conditioner on the table before I stained it. Then I used the stain that I used on my staircase makeover. I put several coats on to get the desired look. Next, I sealed the table with a couple coats of poly urethane, danish oil and then several coats of furniture wax.
After the top was done, I painted the bottom portion with a black enamel paint. I also painted the benches and chairs black too.
TAA DAAA!!!!
I love it…absolutely love it! I can’t believe this is my table. It looks so classy yet country at the same time…hmmm, “country chic?” Maybe I’m on to something!?
***UPDATE…6/2014 – This post was originally published in August 2011. My dining room table has held up beautifully over the past three years. It still looks like a new table. I think the furniture wax has made all the difference.

I loved your transformation so much that I just finished doing my set, which was very similar to yours….but possibly in much worse condition!
Thank you so much for posting, and sharing the information. I love the way my table set turned out. Before it was embarrassing for people to see my kitchen set….now I am proud of it!! It didn’t cost much to do….just some time and effort!

How did you paint the black? Sprayer or brush

I love how your table turned out! Do you happen to remember what color/brand stain you used? My cabinets are almost the exact color and I would love to re-stain my table using your stain color. I’ve tried so many stains but none have matched well enough. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you!
