Sawhorse Desk

I’m a start to finish kinda gal.  I like to start a project and then work on it until it is finished. However, that doesn’t always happen and this project was one of those times.  Last Fall, one of my boys bought his own computer and was in need of a desk for it.  So I got the idea to create a sawhorse desk.

My Better Half threw together these “sawhorses” using some old bed slats that we had in our wood pile.  I liked the sawhorses but was struggling to come up with inspiration for the top of the desk. After brainstorming for a couple weeks and tripping over the sawhorses in the boys’ room, I decided to scrap the idea for a while.

So a year later, I revisited this project and pulled the sawhorses out of the garage attic.  After staining them with an Ebony colored stain, I knew I wanted to move forward on this desk.  The Ebony gave them a rustic look and that at least gave me some direction.

I started looking around for desktop surfaces…particularly freebies from what we had lying around.  When My Better Half got home, I got him in on the project and he started pulling stuff out of the garage attic.

When we bought the house 20 years ago, these bi-fold closet doors were in what is now our boys’ room.  They have been up in the attic for probably 17 years and we just never threw them out. Now, I know why!!  They made a perfect base for our desk top.

My Better Half pulled out some leftover planks that we used when we created the plank walls for our closet office space and our bathroom, and started attaching them to the bi-fold doors with the pin nailer.

Once the pieces were all cut to size and nailed in place, we attached trim around the front and side edges, giving the desk a wooden block look.

We used the same Ebony stain on the desktop and I stood back with my breath taken away.  I LOVED it!!

We moved the desk up to the boys’ room and then attached the desktop to the sawhorses with brackets.

I really like the look of this desk in their room.  It matches nicely and adds such character.

, Saving 4 SixIt has plenty room for a computer or two and a work space as well.

, Saving 4 SixThe crazy part about this desk is that we didn’t spend a penny on it!  We still need to find some stools that will go with it better, but for now, the ones from my kitchen island work just fine.

So now my boys have a very practical space that looks good and was FREE!

What a great thing!
