My Better Half made a kind but troubling comment a few months ago about how much time I spend on my phone looking at Facebook. It stung a little but I knew it was true. My initial reaction was to get mad, but after giving it some thought I realized he was right and I needed to take action and so I removed the Facebook app from my phone. The first week, I missed it a little but it didn’t take long for me to get adjusted to only having it on my computer and now it’s nice to not get sucked in to the drama of Facebook every time I see notifications on my phone. However, when I’m sitting in the waiting room, at my daughter’s piano lesson, or waiting for water to boil I needed something to look at (wink, wink), so I’ve been spending those times browsing Pinterest. In doing so, I’ve been drooling over delicious food, fancy white couches, and perfectly organized and spotless kitchens. I still haven’t figured out how they have those perfect kitchens. Nothing on the counter but fruit and a plant? Is that real??
So, don’t take this the wrong way if you have a spotless, perfect kitchen…it really is a dream of mine, but with a family that loves to cook, limited space, and the fact that I can never seem to find the tool I’m looking for when I want it, I need to come up with some kind of counter top storage that would help my kitchen run more efficiently.
The last week of every month, the local thrift store has 50% off everything and so last month I found this basket. It had a nice metal liner in it and everything. It is perfect for my new counter top storage.
The basket is nice and sturdy but was missing some of the paint on the wicker. Plus, I didn’t really like the color anyway, so I took out the liner, grabbed my trusty spray paint and got busy.
The results of spray paint are always pretty impressive and this was no different. I filled the basket with all the necessities of cooking…spatulas, wooden spoons, tongs, salt and pepper, and some olive oil. They are all right where I can reach them as I’m cooking. This basket is especially good because when I need, I can take the liner and rinse it out.
I really like my new little organized space on my kitchen counter. I guess for this season in life I’ll be thankful that I have kiddos cooking in the kitchen and someone to help me put away the dishes. I’ll also keep in mind that every home functions differently and this simple little basket on my counter helps mine run more efficiently, and be grateful.

This is a great reminder for me. It is so easy to get jealous of “pinterest perfection”, forgetting that those pictures were staged and all the extra stuff is probably hiding in the dryer 😛
