We hadn’t ever stained our deck and we have had it for 17 years. What were we thinking? Well, this was the season to stain it but first it needed some serious help. It was REALLY filthy.
I did some research on the best way to clean a deck however most were considerably more expensive than the bleach and water approach. I know this is not the “green” method some may choose but it was the most affordable one for us.
So with one part bleach two parts water, we scrubbed the deck. The transformation was AMAZING. It was a lot of work but so very worth it in the end.
It did bleach out the wood’s natural color but that was fine with us. We were planning to stain it anyway.
A few days later we stained it with a Pewter Semi Transparent Behr Stain.
The finished product is just perfect!

It looks great, Carrie! As soon as I saw your link I clicked right through because we have had an unstained deck for two years and it’s already really moldy, so I’ve been researching and determined that this is our summer to take care of it. Thanks for the tips and for linking up with MERCY iNK!

Wow! The finished deck looks great with your house! 🙂
I washed my RV with 50:50 mix of bleach and water with a squirt of Dawn followed by a power washing. Worked really well and didn’t hurt the grass or my flowers around the camper at all…

PS–or me or my hair which got really soaked and sticky with all of the spraying and power washing. I truly was afraid to look at my hair once I came into the house, but all was well!
PSS when using this, Put the mixture in a bug sprayer, start at the bottom of the camper and work in small areas, not letting it dry before hitting it with power washer or it will streak and make a HUGE mess!!!! I wore eye protection and old clothing but nothing on my hair or face other than the eyes. I did shower as soon as I finished and it took about 6 hours or so–40 ft 5th wheel with 2 slides…

Love the grey! We are in the process of refinishing our deck and were also so amazed at the difference after we cleaned it.

Carrie, it turned out beautifully! I’m going to be doing this again this fall. I just did it last year but the trees keep making a mess again. Great job!

Hi there, love the finish❤️. I was just wondering what the wood was. I have pine, and I know different woods come out different colours.
Cheers

Did you paint the handrails a darker color or is that just the lighting/photo?
