I really love the convenience of disinfectant wipes especially with boys. You know, bathrooms can get pretty gross and are almost always in need of a good wipe down. But the prices of name brand disinfectant wipes is ridiculous and the quality of the dollar store ones are pretty pathetic, so I did a little search and found that I can make them, very easily.
Here’s the step by step instructions.
Take a roll of Bounty or Viva or higher quality paper towels and cut the roll in half, using a knife.
Place half of the roll of paper towels in an airtight container.
In a separate bowl, combine
1 1/2 cups warm water
2 tablespoons white vinegar
1 1/2 tablespoons Dawn dish soap
Then pour all ingredients over the 1/2 roll of paper towels.
Seal up the container and flip upside down until the paper towels are fully saturated.
Once they are fully saturated, you can can easily remove the roll from the center of the paper towels.
These are so inexpensive and are wonderful for that deep clean or that simple wipe-down. I use them all the time now.
So, if you’re looking for a great alternative to the high priced or not so effective wipes, try out this simple recipe.
Pretty Cool, huh!?

Cool. Had to pin this one. 🙂

Great tips, Carrie. I’ve seen this done before with natural cleaners, and I like that idea, but quite frankly don’t always have the time to put the cleaner together. Using Dawn is such a terrific alternative. Thanks!

Great idea, I really like the jar you used. Where did you find a jar the right size?
Carrie says
The jar was a thrift store find but I’m keeping my eyes open for another one like it…I’ll let you know if I find one.

do the paper towels begin to disintegrate after sitting wet for some time?
Carrie says
The Bounty and Viva paper towels that I used have not disintegrated. I used to make my own baby wipes using paper towels and they did not come apart either.

I used to sell tupperware about 20 years ago and we demonstrated making baby wipes to sell product. It’s a tried and true technique. Dropping by from the Party Bunch to say hi 🙂

Where did you find that jar? I have been looking for something to make mine in. Thanks for your help.

The jar was a thrift store find… sorry, I would like a few more myself.

I Like the dawn idea very much. But are they really disinfecting? or just clean up? I would also like to know where to find the jar. Thanks for your input!
Carrie says
The jar was a thrift store find, so I really can’t tell you where to find one.
As far as the “disinfecting” question, I can only give my opinion, I’m not an expert by any means. So, my opinion is this: vinegar has disinfecting abilities… it is not as thorough as bleach, but I’m not using bleach for other reasons. I found this post helpful in determining whether to call them “cleaning wipes” or “disinfecting wipes” http://disinfected.org/does-vinegar-disinfect/

You can use rubbing alcohol instead of the vinegar it is more disinfectant than vinegar.

Do you need to rice because of using the Dawn?

I needed this recipe! What a great idea, I especially like the use of vinegar since it’s non-toxic.
Jelli says
Carrie, I’m making these right now! The only hindrance I’ve encountered so far is how hard it is to cut those towel rolls in half. Goodness, I almost broke a sweat, haha! Thanks again for the recipe!

Try an electric knife. Works much better.

Add a few drops of tea tree oil if you want to turn them into disinfecting wipes. It has antimicrobial properties.

You can also use t shirt rags either from old t shirts or you can buy them in the automotive section from Walmart, Lowe’s etc.Cut them to a size that you like. The best part is that they are reusable, just throw them in the wash! I make my own fabric softener using t shirt rags.just soak them in homemade softener wring out and toss in the dryer.

I have to say that I thought these would be more hassle than they are worth because of using dish soap. I though I would have to go back over it with water to get soap residue up, but surprisingly there was no residue. I went over it with a wet paper towel and nothing, no tiny soap bubbles, no film, no slimy soap trace at all. These actual somehow act like store bought cleaning wipes. I actually didn’t have a container big enough to fit the roll in so I had to carefully remove the cardboard when it was dry in order to shove it into the container I had, but even that was pretty easy.
